The Legacy of

Michael Douglas Jones

Bass Vocalist Michael Douglas Jones was an inspiring artist in the field of opera. As a vocalist, Michael worked regionally in the US with New York City Opera, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Sarasota Opera, The Florentine Opera, Memphis Opera, to name a few, as well as internationally at Welsh National Opera, Piteå Kammaroper, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, and The Banff Arts Centre, where he found a cohort of artistic collaborators who fed his hunger for more creative, challenging and contemporary repertoire in opera.
Michael won the prestigious Jessie award for “outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role” for his creation of the Marquis in 120 Songs for the Marquis de Sade (Hannan) in the world premiere co-produced by Modern Baroque Opera and Vancouver New Music.

When Michael toured throughout Scandinavia, he discovered the poetry of Swedish Nobel Laureate Tomas Tranströmer. With Tranströmer’s blessing, he began to create a collaborative music piece based on several of his poems.  That piece, drömseminarium, became the reason that Michael created Companion Star: A Living Laboratory for the Creative Process.

Companion Star was a company committed to developing new musical works both collaboratively and creatively. And along with other pieces that they developed, including the award winning Under Milkwood, Companion Star established a track record of creative development. Sadly, this was cut short by Michael’s death just as drömseminarium was focusing on its premier.

Foundry Arts was started to continue and expand on Michael’s work and the legacy. The creative, challenging work Michael supported, and the means by which these pieces were developed which he established, live on in our mission and in the Michael Douglas Jones Writers’ Room and Lab.
